Here's a thing nobody really prepares you for: at a tiny studio, you don't do one job. You do all of them, often in the same afternoon, often badly.
Yesterday I started the day in a genuinely good creative headspace — the kind where an idea finally clicks and you can see how a whole section is supposed to feel. Forty minutes in, an invoice question came up. Then a tax form that needed answering before a deadline I'd half-forgotten. Then a hardware order that had gone sideways and needed a phone call. By the time I got back to the creative thing, the headspace was gone. Just... gone. Like a dream you can't get back into once you wake up.
That's the part that surprised me most about going small. It's not that the admin is hard. It's that the
switching is expensive. Every jump from "designer brain" to "tiny-business-owner brain" costs something you don't get a receipt for. You feel productive — look at all those tabs I closed! — and then you realize you haven't actually moved the thing that matters.
We're trying a few fixes. Nothing clever. We've started batching the boring stuff into one ugly block, usually late afternoon when the creative tank is empty anyway. Mornings are protected for the work that needs a quiet brain. We've also gotten more comfortable saying "this can wait until Thursday," which sounds obvious and was somehow very hard to learn.
The honest truth is some of this is just the cost of being new and small, and no amount of clever scheduling makes it disappear. You can't hire it away when there's no one to hire yet. So you wear the hats. You get a little better at swapping them quickly. You forgive yourself for the afternoons that turn entirely to paperwork.
And every so often you get one of those rare, golden, uninterrupted stretches — three hours where nobody needs a signature and nothing is on fire — and you remember exactly why you signed up for all of it.
We had one of those this morning. It was great. Then a courier knocked.
