Sent, and then nothing

Tuesday, September 22, 2026

The deck went out at the end of last week. Since then I have checked my email more times than in the whole month before it, and every single time it has contained nothing.
This is a new category of difficulty for us. For a year and a bit, every hard thing has been hard in a way we could attack. Something's broken, you fix it. Something's unclear, you argue until it isn't. The work has always been in the room with us. Now the most important thing happening to this studio is happening in someone else's inbox, on a schedule we don't set, and there is no version of working harder that makes it arrive sooner.
I am not built for this. I don't think anyone who chooses to make things for a living is built for this.
What's caught me off guard is how quickly the silence starts sounding like an answer. It isn't. Everyone who has done this before has told us the same thing: these conversations move slowly, people are busy, three weeks of nothing means three weeks of nothing. I believe them in the morning. By about four in the afternoon I've decided the silence is a verdict.
The real risk isn't the mood, though. It's what idle hands do to a build. Twice this week I've caught myself opening something I'd promised not to touch, because the polish list is right there and touching it would feel like progress. That's the whole trap. We made the call to hold the visual pass until there's funding behind it, and the moment I get restless is exactly when that decision is most likely to quietly unmake itself. So we've given ourselves permission to be a bit boring for a few weeks. Documentation. Tidying. The audience work, which actually does compound.
The other thing I keep reminding myself: the demo still works. It worked before we pressed send and it works now. Nobody's opinion has changed it.
Being new means you don't yet have the calluses for waiting. Apparently you grow them the same way you grow everything else around here — by doing it badly the first time.
